Nahibly, une histoire AGAIN

CHRISTIAN ROMAIN KOSSA

The solo Nahibly une histoire Again draws inspiration from the attack against a refugee camp that took place in Western Ivory Coast in 2012.

Through a documentary exploration and the construction of an intimate story, the show addresses the question of mourning, the loss of the loved ones and collective memory.

How does one survive the mourning?

And how do we take care of the living?

“On July 20, 2012, the lives of more than 2,500 civilians were turned upside down when the Nahibly refugee camp was stormed by an armed mob of traditional hunters, soldiers and civilians. Hundreds disappeared, were executed or raped...

If the list of massacres is long in the history of my country, Nahibly is for me a tragedy apart. Indeed, the attack took place in peacetime on a territory under UN protection and the victims, from the Western part of the country like me, could have been relatives, friends and neighbours...

I grew up with war and violence. I was a teenager when the war broke out in 2002. Guns were everywhere, I still remember the frightened, grieving faces.

As an adult, I experienced again in 2020 the recurrent incitement to hatred, the human rights’ violations, the violence and abuses in the run-up to the presidential elections.

More intimately, Nahibly also echoes my own bereavements, the loss of loved ones, which strangely enough, despite the years, I have never been able to accept.

How many Nahibly do we need for the cycle to end? How many generations will it take to put an end to the recurrent political and social violence in Ivory Coast? Who will have the courage to write a new chapter in our country’s history?”
